The transcript includes Hindi and English translations of a beautiful verse credited to Adi Guru Shankaracharya which he created when he saw an old man practicing Grammar rules.
Bhaja Govindam (English)

O deluded minded friend, chant Govinda, worship Govinda, love Govinda as memorizing the rules of grammar cannot save one at the time of death. ॥1॥

O deluded minded ! Give up your lust to amass wealth. Give up such desires from your mind and take up the path of righteousness. Keep your mind happy with the money which comes as the result of your hard work. ॥2॥

Do not get attracted on seeing the parts of woman’s anatomy under the influence of delusion, as these are made up of skin, flesh and similar substances. Deliberate on this again and again in your mind. ॥3॥

Life is as ephemeral as water drops on a lotus leaf . Be aware that the whole world is troubled by disease, ego and grief. ॥4॥

As long as a man is fit and capable to earn money, everyone in the family show affection towards him. But after wards, when the body becomes weak no one enquires about him even during the talks. ॥5॥

Till one is alive, family members enquire kindly about his welfare . But when the vital air (Prana) departs from the body, even the wife fears from the corpse. ॥6॥

In childhood we are attached to sports, in youth, we are attached to woman . Old age goes in worrying over every thing . But there is no one who wants to be engrossed in Govind, the parabrahman at any stage. ॥7॥

Who is your wife ? Who is your son? Indeed, strange is this world. O dear, think again and again who are you and from where have you come. ॥8॥

Association with saints brings  non-attachment, non-attachment leads to right knowledge, right knowledge leads us to permanent awareness,to which liberation follows. ॥9॥

As lust without youth, lake without water, the relatives without wealth are meaningless, similarly this world ceases to exist, when the Truth is revealed? ॥10॥

Do not boast of wealth, friends (power), and youth, these can be taken away in a flash by Time . Knowing this whole world to be under the illusion of Maya, you try to attain the Absolute. ॥11॥

Day and night, dusk and dawn, winter and spring come and go. In this sport of Time entire life goes away, but the storm of desire never departs or diminishes. ॥12॥

This bouquet of twelve verses was imparted to a grammarian by the all-knowing, god-like Sri Shankara. ॥12A॥

Oh deluded man ! Why do you worry about your wealth and wife? Is there no one to take care of them? Only the company of saints can act as a  boat in three worlds to take you out from this ocean of rebirths. ॥13॥

Matted and untidy hair, shaven heads, orange or variously colored cloths are all a way to earn livelihood . O deluded man why don’t you understand it even after seeing.॥14॥

Even an old man of weak limbs, hairless head, toothless mouth, who walks with a stick, cannot leave his desires. ॥15॥

One who warms his body by fire after sunset,  curls his body to  his knees to avoid cold;  eats the begged food and sleeps beneath the tree, he is also bound by desires, even  in these difficult situations . ॥16॥

According to all religions, without knowledge one cannot get liberated in hundred births though he might visit Gangasagar or observe fasts or do charity. ॥17॥

Reside in a temple or below a tree, sleep on mother earth as your bed, stay alone, leave all the belongings and comforts, such renunciation can give all the pleasures to anybody. ॥18॥

One may like meditative practice or worldly pleasures , may be attached or detached. But only the one fixing his mind on God lovingly enjoys bliss, enjoys bliss, enjoys bliss. ॥19॥

Those who study Gita, even a little, drink just a drop of water from the holy Ganga, worship Lord Krishna with love even once, Yama, the God of death has no control over them. ॥20॥

Born again, die again, stay again in the mother’s womb, it is indeed difficult to cross this world. O Murari ! please help me through your mercy. ॥21॥

One who wears cloths ragged due to chariots, move on the path free from virtue and sin, keeps his mind controlled through constant practice, enjoys like a carefree exuberant child. ॥22॥

Who are you ? Who am I ? From where I have come ? Who is my mother, who is my father ? Ponder over these and after understanding, this world to be meaningless like a dream, relinquish it. ॥23॥

Lord Vishnu resides in me, in you and in everything else, so your anger is meaningless . If you wish to attain the eternal status of Vishnu, practice equanimity all the time, in all the things. ॥24॥

Try not to win the love of your friends, brothers, relatives and son(s) or to fight with your enemies. See yourself in everyone and give up ignorance of duality everywhere.॥25॥

Give up desires, anger, greed and delusion. Ponder over your real nature . Those devoid of the knowledge of self come in this world, a hidden hell, endlessly. ॥26॥

Sing thousand glories of Lord Vishnu, constantly remembering his form in your heart. Enjoy the company of noble people and do charity for the poor and the needy. ॥27॥

People use this body for pleasure which gets diseased in the end. Though in this world everything ends in death, man does not give up the sinful conduct. ॥28॥

Keep on thinking that money is cause of all troubles, it cannot give even a bit of happiness. A rich man fears even his own son . This is the law of riches everywhere. ॥29॥

Do pranayam, the regulation of life forces, take proper food, constantly distinguish the permanent from the fleeting,  Chant the holy names of God with love and meditate, with attention, with utmost attention. ॥30॥

Be dependent only on the lotus feet of your Guru and get salvation from this world. Through disciplined senses and mind, you can see the indwelling Lord of your heart !॥31॥

Thus through a deluded grammarian lost in memorizing rules of the grammar, the all knowing  Sri Shankara motivated his disciples for enlightenment. ॥32॥

O deluded minded friend, chant Govinda, worship Govinda, love Govinda as there is no other way to cross the life’s ocean except lovingly remembering the holy names of God. ॥33॥

Is Wisdom Similar to Boredom?

Or is it a disease in which you get ‘been there done that’ feeling regarding everything. After all wisdom is being deeply connected to the source of everything and it has all potentials and eventualities in it so you know all and everything in essence if you’re wise. What is humility? Is it a trick you learn to get adjusted in society–which includes saluting elders and saying thank you or is it knowing for sure how little you or anyone else knows and thus being unable to really care for anything. When you don’t care much for anything in particular you esteem everything equally. Any idea as soon as it gets created is destroyed by an opposing idea so that no fruitful action is possible. To be utterly honest inaction is impossible for an organism because it was designed for being active and that’s the way you see them existing around you. What about monks who enter into trance for extended periods of time? Well, only they can answer but it must be similar to cryogenic hibernation of Walt Disney and others. Integration: Radiation and Absorption

Whatever you think, speak or do is a radiation for totality. It has always been so–now after awakening you realize it more than ever. All words you think, write and all expressions via body, mind and speech are radiations. If you feel you belong to a community of light workers, angels, humanity, star-seeds or gods—your expressions, your creativity is connecting you to the mind-continuum of those very beings across time and space. Absorption is receiving words, light-codes, energy in all its possible forms from all existence. If you feel you belong to a certain group you will receive light from them. The actuality of radiation and absorption–the interconnections of various forms of consciousness and dependent arising of all phenomena becomes overwhelming and then enlightening as you awake towards your full-potential. 3 Days 3 Quotes Round 4, Day 3!

Then Yajnavalkya said: Verily, not for the sake of the husband, my dear, is the husband loved, but he is loved for the sake of the self which, in its true nature, is one with the Supreme Self. Verily, not for the sake of the wife, my dear, is the wife loved, but she is loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of the sons, my dear, are the sons loved, hut they are loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of wealth, my dear, is wealth loved, but it is loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of the brahmin, my dear, is the brahmin loved, but he is loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of the kshatriya, my dear, is the kshatriya loved, but he is loved for the sake of the self.

Yajur Veda, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad II, IV-Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi (I), 5

Verily, not for the sake of the worlds, my dear, are the worlds loved, but they are loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of the gods, my dear, are the gods loved, but they are loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of the beings, my dear, are the beings loved, but they are loved for the sake of the self. Verily, not for the sake of the All, my dear, is the All loved, but it is loved for the sake of the self. Verily, my dear Maitreyi, it is the Self that should be realized-should be heard of, reflected on, and meditated upon. By the realization of the Self, my dear-through hearing, reflection, and meditation-all this is known.

Being Kind is Not Being Fool!

While walking on spiritual path it’s necessary to understand certain paradoxical situations which are subtle but vital for our growth. Sages like Buddha and Narada transformed barber dacoits and murderers like Angulimala and Valmiki by power of their enlightenment and charisma. Prima facie it seems appropriate for all of us to not restrain any company good or bad too, as everyone of us has the same god residing inside. But on a closer inspection and while living by these principles it will be known that it’s not very practical always.

Renunciates were suggested to never visit their families in ancient times. They used to mingle with other people and sometimes even with other householders( though some injunctions strictly prohibit mingling with other householders too) but not with their families. The reason behind it was to avoid dense karma they shared with family members. It’s easier to deal with karma while being with people you are not too close to but when it comes to close relations most of us get bewildered and they are the true test of your transcending modes of nature. If you can stay without reacting to your spouse or siblings you might have transcended karma. But most people can’t do so, especially in the initial stages of spiritual practice, that is why those injunctions suggested to stay away from family members. Now, the same lord resides inside the family as does inside you but the separation was to ripen your practice.

Pearls of Wisdom From Bhagavad Geeta!

4585894937

Bhagavad Geeta is the song of lord Krishna. It was delivered in the battlefield of Kurukshetra some 5000 years ago to Arjuna who was his beloved friend and disciple. It has been influencing thinkers of world since then. Originally its 700 verses were part of sage Vyasa’s epic Mahabharata. I will take verses of Geeta from my reading and discuss them with you.

Today I am taking verses 5th and 6th from chapter 3, Karma Yoga:

Everyone is compelled by the modes of nature working inside them to act. No one could be without doing Karma even for a moment. ||5||

One who forcibly controls sense organs but keeps thinking about sensory objects is called a hypocrite. ||6||

Krishna is explaining importance of performing duties to Arjuna who is terrified of battlefield. In previous verses he tells him that there are two ways to know self–one is to realize it by doing meditation as Jnanis do and another is to perform devotional service of lord. Without these two if you declare yourself a renunciate you will be merely deluding yourself.  Continue reading “Pearls of Wisdom From Bhagavad Geeta!”

David at  Chape Personal Trainer is such a wonderful friend. We have been discussing Vedic Astrology for sometime now and he said that he likes to read the quotes I share. I am so thankful for his kind words. It’s no secret that our horoscopes have many similarities and that is why when I read about him in an award post I thought he is so much like me! Later on, as I observed his horoscope I found that we indeed had many similarities in charts too! He is a very decent friend and I recommend you to visit his blog and follow him!

I Can’t Stay Mad at You!

I Can’t Stay Mad at You

Do you hold grudges or do you believe in forgive and forget?

holding-on-to-anger-is-like-grasping-a-hot-coal

I believe in forgive and forget. When I perceive an injustice it does make me unsettled but the perception involves me seeing that there are innumerable causes behind it. The person who is doing something wrong, either to me or to someone else is merely an instrument. The darkness inside the person is not really his choice. There are no evil persons in the world. Darkness is the absence of light, so everyone is inherently good because everyone is made of light. Their psyche is overpowered by darkness and they suffer more than the people who suffer because of them.

This is one side. Another side is, acceptance. If I totally take the responsibility for my situation and believe that it is test for me, for my patience and whatever happens to me happens because somehow I carry seeds for its fruition, there remains no need of even forgiving anyone because they are not the reason behind my pain and suffering. Forgiving is a better choice if you don’t understand Karma too. If you are without conflict you can sleep better and live more peacefully. With heavy heart you can neither sleep well nor function fully. Forgiving is good and forgetting conflict is also good, but we should learn our lessons too. This is what is meant by being sensitive. If you learn your lessons your wisdom might help you and many others in future. Forgiving people who have darkness and as many times as it is needed doesn’t mean that you don’t have boundaries. You need to keep your distance from some people or situations to be at peace and this is wisdom. Recklessness is not kindness.
