Which Is Dearer?

Tao Te Ching 44

Fame or the self, which is dearer?
The self or wealth, which is greater?
Gain or loss, which is more painful?

Thus excessive love must lead to great spending
Excessive hoarding must lead to heavy loss

Knowing contentment avoids disgrace
Knowing when to stop avoids danger
Thus one can endure indefinitely

  1. If you would care for an alternate point of view, may I recommend you read On Love from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibraun. If you wish to find oneness with the universe, I know no better written source than The Prophet, but if you wish to maintain your sense of self indefinitely as you are then read it not.
“But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.”-Kahlil Gibran
