Atmakaraka is the planet with highest degrees in any sign. Atmakaraka represents soul’s mission in life. The sign in which Atmakaraka is in Navamsa(ninth division of Radix) is called Swamsa.
The study of other divisional charts like Siddhamsa etc. is also important for spiritual figures but Navamsa and Atmakaraka hold supreme importance. I tried to look for such a consistency in charts of spiritual teachers and I think I have found something which looks promising for a while.
It’s quite perspicuous that Atmakaraka in chart of spiritual teachers should be placed in the Navamsa of Jupiter. Therefore, It could be either in the sign Sagittarius or in Pisces. It’s important to note that Atmakaraka in the sign Pisces suggests that native would do pious deeds and would attain final liberation. Another condition is that Atmakaraka in the Pisces navamsa should not be afflicted.
I studied a few charts of most renowned spiritual figures of past century in India. It’s because their charts are available online for study. I used data available on Astrosage website for study.
Atmakaraka in the Sagittarius
For Jiddu Krishnamurti, Pandit Shri Ram Sharma Acharya, Swami Vivekananda, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi and Baba Ramdev, Atmakaraka is present in the sign Sagittarius. These people have been great teachers with a worldwide reputation for their groundbreaking work in field of spirituality.
Atmakaraka in the Pisces
I have found Atmakaraka in the sign Pisces for Mahatma Gandhi, Osho Rajneesh, Shri Shri Ravishankar and Winston Churchill. Churchill was obviously not a spiritual figure but he was a genius. The condition that Atmakaraka should not get an aspect from any malefic is not satisfied in any of the cases above.
Jupiter as Atmakaraka
Other Atmakarakas have a peculiarity of their own but Jupiter as Atmakaraka suggests a person born to be Guru. Jiddu Krishnamurti has Sun as Atmakaraka suggesting problems with his ego. Similarly in charts of Gandhi and Ramana Maharshi Atmakaraka is Moon, which suggests a calm temperament inclined to serve others generously. Saturn as Atmakaraka suggests someone inclined to serve others, as in case of Eckhart Tolle. Mars as Atmakaraka suggests a soul born to fight, a Yogi in case of spirituality. Jupiter is the greatest planet and best among the benefics. He’s preceptor of Gods known as Guru. It goes without saying that in chart of a spiritual Guru, the Guru must be strong enough. If Guru is Atmakaraka, such a person is blessed with Vedanta knowledge. In charts of Osho and Shri Shri Ravishankar, Jupiter is Atmakaraka. Further, as per noted Astrologer Pt. Sanjay Rath retrograde Atmakaraka suggests a strong deep rooted desire as cause of the birth. In horoscope of Osho Jupiter the Atmakaraka is retrograde. Also, Jupiter is exalted in the Radix sign and in the sign Pisces in Navamsa.
Jupiter in Radix
Jupiter would be exalted in charts of most of the spiritual figures. It’s exalted in charts of Osho, Gurdjieff, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Shri Shri Ravishankar, Aurobindo and others. Other than that Jupiter is in the fifth house for most of the spiritual gurus, because fifth house is the house of divine wisdom.
Mula is one of the most peculiar of all nakshatras. It’s not that good for material life but it’s excellent for spirituality. Many great saints were born either in Mula or in Gandanta Mula nakshatras. Paramahansa Yogananda and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu were born in Magha. Tukaram, Tulsidas, Adi Shankaracharya, Aurobindo, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Shri Ram Sharma, Jnaneshwar, Samarth Guru Ramdas, Kabir, Mother Anandmayi etc. were born in Mula nakshatra ruled by Ketu. Ketu is not only karaka for detachment but also for final liberation.
Sun, Moon and Malefics
Moon represents mind. Sun represents soul. Mercury — intellect. Jupiter represents wisdom. Malefics like Saturn, Rahu and Ketu affecting them suggest detachment and spirituality in charts of spiritual figures. Saturn and Ketu are special saint makers. Saturn not only suggests discipline but also detachment. Its association with Moon and Mercury tends to give pessimism, realism and detachment. Ketu’s association causes burst of mind and enlightenment. Saturn’s conjunction with Mercury tends to make intellect penetrating and very serious.
Fourth, Eighth and Twelfth houses
These three houses play a great role for spiritual nativities because they are houses of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These three signs are signs of final liberation, especially Pisces. Many planets in these houses or in the signs Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces suggest a native inclined towards spirituality to exclusion of everything else in his life. Besides these many planets in sign Sagittarius(Osho) or in the ninth house also suggest a spiritual Guru because ninth house or Sagittarius are Dharma signs.
The conglomeration of four or more planets in any of the signs in any houses suggests a Sanyasa Yoga in classical Vedic Astrology texts. Such stelliums would be especially powerful if they have Moon, Sun or lord of the sign in it. These Yogas suggest a saint with paraphernalia if this Yoga occurs in a Kendra. This stellium suggests a great spiritual teacher if stellium occurs in houses fourth, eighth, twelfth, ninth and or in signs Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces and Sagittarius.
Though not as a rule–it’s been observed that most of the spiritual people have Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces, Taurus and Cancer ascendants. Jupiter’s lagnas are most frequently observed in horoscopes of spiritual gurus. Venus, Moon and Mercury are also benefics so their lagnas are also common among notable spiritual people. Note: Even with Capricorn ascendant many spiritual leaders have been seen in the last century–for example: Sri Sri Ravishankar, Baba Ramdev, Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and Swami Vivekananda. Some people debate about the last two that they must have Sagittarius ascendant but it is not clear.
According to a classical text Sarvarth Chintamani if Navmasa dispositor of tenth lord is strong and there’s a relation between ninth and tenth lord–it gives rise to this auspicious combination in a natal chart. The native engages in meditation and spiritual deeds.
