The Quiet American (2002)

Contains Spoilers!

This is one of the best love triangle films I’ve ever seen. The music by Craig Armstrong is really outstanding–it’s perhaps one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard. The movie is an adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel and this remake of 1958 film is beautiful in many aspects. The screenplay by Christopher Hampton and Robert Schenkkan is very good. The plot is quite complex but very well handled for such a short length movie.

I am not much for politics but mystery was indeed more political than romantic in nature. The romance is mostly a symbolic representation of political strain between American and European forces in the Vietnam war.  In any case it’s a wonderful mystery thriller. Michael Caine’s performance is impressive and Brendan Fraser does complete justice with his difficult mysterious character. The film touches you at many levels and it’s the success of wonderful storytelling.
