Adiguru Shankaracharya is considered to be most prominent Philosopher of India. See this quotation from Wikipedia:

Kripaluji states in his lecture 23 of series Bramh, Jeev and Maya that Shankara became a devotee of Krishna and he motivated his mother as well as other disciples for the same. Kripaluji has beautifully pointed towards contradictions in the principles of Shankaracharya by taking Vedic-hymns as references. In his opinion, Shankara as the avatara of lord Shiva came to re-establish Vedic Dharma because Buddhism(Buddhavtara was against the sacrifice, rituals and meat-eating in Bramhins; which established Ahimsa as highest Truth and rejected Vedas altogether) was becoming prevalent in that time. Kripaluji has quoted Shloka 107 of 70th chapter of Padma Purana, in which lord Vishnu(Krishna) orders lord Shiva to incarnate in Kaliyuga to make people deluded by ‘imaginary principles,’ in order to sustan creation which would otherwise dwindle because of the devoted Bhaktas who have Vairagya.
Shankaracharya did travel to create many idols across the India which seems puzzling for a Jnana-Yogi but not for a devotee!
